Progressive Research Findings – Individual

February 7, 2010

For the individual part of the project, i have decided to compare CCF with AIDS healthcare foundation. Children Cancer Foundation is a non profitable organisation establish in 1992 at Singapore. Its aim is to  improve the quality of life of children with cancer and their families through enhancing their emotional, social and medical well-being. Its vision is to become a world class provider of resources. However, for it to become a world class provider of resources, it first have to create awareness to the people first, and promote themselves in the fastest and easiest way. And personally, i think the fastest way to promote itself is through new social media tools like facebook, twitter, youtube and blogs. Currently, CCF has a website that is not up to date, not using web 2.0 tools and they do not use any new social media tools besides E-newsletters.

Firstly, why use facebook? Facebook is a free social networking whereby people can advertise and raise awareness of their organisation. Simple yet special features like photo and video uploaders in facebook creates a user friendly site for people. Events can also be create to inform people of its latest event and programmes. Video Ads can also be posted and comments can also be written by people. In addition, game applications can also attract the younger generation to be more aware of such organisations as well. With 350 million active users worldwide, facebook can definitely help CCF to create awareness faster and easier. Compare to TV advertisements, facebook is a cheaper and faster way to advertise. It is because the cost of TV advertisement is so expensive and the play time is only for a few seconds. Whats more, many people are watching TV, movies and shows online now. The best way to advertise is through the internet. It also allows people to make donation too.

Secondly, why use Twitter? Twitter is a free social networking and microblogging service that allows users to send and read messages or information known as tweet. It is fast, simple and efficient. With the increasing amount of people using twitter, CCF can create awareness faster and easier too. Twitter allows users to spread information in the simplest form, notifications would be send to its followers. To be a follower, simple write a tweet on the users profile and you would be able to get daily updates of the user. Twitter is used best for event information or maybe changes made to an event where simply you can just write the time changed or the location changed. Comparing twitter and emails or sms. Twitter is a much more efficient way to spread information because sms are expensive and also it is a hassle to open up emails that only consist of a 100 words. Hence to save time and money, twitter would be a better choice.

Thirdly, why use Youtube? Youtube is the world’s largest online video community where people can upload videos to it. Because of the number of users, youtube is a better choice to create awareness for CCF in comparison to TV advertising. It is cheaper to advertise through youtube instead of the Televison, also the video posted on youtube can also be longer then the advertisements posted on the TV. Youtube also has a comment section where people can comment on the video. There is also a hit meter, it allows the user to keep track on the number of people viewing the video. CCF can create a channel to allow a community of people to subscribe it and post videos that create a better awareness for them.

Lastly, why blog? Blog is an online diary or journal which allow the user to sign up for a free account and create their own webpage to post about their daily lives, activities, events and some for publication purposes. A blog beats printing brochures to spread information or events. Blogs are effective because, not only words can be posted up. Videos and photos are able to be posted as well. This is a better choice then brochures. Whats more, Blogs are free. And if the blog has a large amount of viewers, some companies might even want to pay to advertise on the blog. It is killing two birds with one stone. People can also tag or comment on the post or the blog.

Due to the effects on new media social tools, i believe that AIDS healthcare foundation has done a great job in creating awareness for their foundation because they have Facebook, twitter and youtube accounts. Los Angeles-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is a global organization providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy to over 100,000 people in 22 countries. It is the nation’s largest provider of HIV/AIDS medical care.

Its facebook has a total of 2660 fans, it is up to date since its latest post was 3.30 am last night. Videos and pictures are also posted on its facebook account to create awareness to its fans. Links are also posted on the facebook account to redirect people to its main website.

Its twitter account has 2000 over followers too. It is also up to date. Sms and mms can also be sent to its followers to inform them through twitter. With the latest technology in the phones, people are able to view twitter and facebook accounts anytime anywhere.

Its youtube channel has 113 video uploads and a total view 110,805 so far. Comments were made and people are also subscribing to its channel. With the latest technology in the phones, people are able to view twitter, facebook and even youtube accounts anytime anywhere.

Apparently, they do not have any blog. I think they should have a blog because Blog is an online diary or journal which allow the user to sign up for a free account and create their own webpage to post about their daily lives, activities, events and some for publication purposes.

In conclusion, I recommend CCF to work on its new social media tools and AIDS healthcare foundation to have a blog because this allows them to create better awareness and promote themselves better in a cheaper and faster way. With the growing number of active users using the internet, i believe the internet is going to take over television and olden media networks such as radios, journal writing and tv. CCF can hire a few it experts to maintain its online media networks, post videos, journals, information and updates daily. So that the networks would be up to date and people can continue spreading and gaining new information daily.

Starlight – Twitter

Starlight children foundation is up to date and they did a great job in creating awareness about this foundation. Their website is up to date and also they use many social media networks like facebook, twitter, youtube, mySpace, Flicker and Linked in. But the network that I am going to research on is Twitter. Twitter is a free social networking and microblogging service that allows users to send and read messages known as tweet. Tweets are a text based post of up to 140 characters displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are knows as followers. These allow every follower to be notified on the author’s latest updates, events and status. As for Starlight’s twitter account, they now have 1000 over followers. Information posted on Starlight’s twitter account is also very up to-date, the most recent one that was posted while I am typing this was 7 hours ago. Also almost every information posted is about their events and latest gadgets, websites and their weekly review. These shows how affective they are in promoting their websites and how they manage to use a social media network to spread their information. I think Twitter would be a better choice to spread information instead of using email and sms. Firstly, sms would be an expensive mean of spreading information. Secondly, it is a hassle to open an email because the people would prefer to get information instantly instead of going through so much just to get information. Hence using twitter, people can just open the web page and see the latest updates of the organisation.

In comparison to Starlight’s use of twitter and Children Cancer Foundation, Children Cancer foundation can use twitter to create awareness among the internet because currently they have not use twitter yet. They should use twitter to create awareness because twitter is used by many people now, they can first target a certain age group that uses twitter then from there post events on their profiles(Twitter allows anyone who has a twitter account to post information on their profiles) and their followers would be able to have a glimpse at it and this can go on throughout the whole twitter and if Children cancer foundation wants to update people on their latest events and these would attract people to attend their annual events and this would increase the number of donations made by the society. Hence there would be more attention on Children Cancer Foundation.
